Although London Ballet began in 1938, by 1940 it needed to combine with Rambert Ballet to survive. This picture explains the complications involved. The amazing annotations are definitely from Pauline Clayden’s hand!
Antony Tudor founded his own company, the London Ballet, after he left Ballet Rambert in 1937, giving regular performances at the Toynbee Hall in east London. The company’s repertory featured ballets he had made at the Mercury Theatre such as Jardin aux lilas (Lilac Garden) and Dark Elegies. New works made for this company included Soirée Musicale and Gala Performance. In June 1940, the company merged with Ballet Rambert and formally closed in 1941.
