1933 – Premiere of Frederick Ashton’s Les Rendezvous by the Vic-Wells Ballet

Down Arrow

Frederick Ashton choreographed Les Rendezvous for the Vic-Wells Ballet in 1933, with Alicia Markova and Stanislas Idzikowski as its first stars (their roles were later taken over by Margot Fonteyn and Robert Helpmann). Music was by Daniel Auber arranged Constant Lambert and designs by William Chappell for the Vic-Wells ballet.Friends meeting and greeting in a park on a lovely summer’s day can never have been more cleverly captured in a ballet. Carefree and witty, with technical flourishes that still test the technique of dancers today, the cast mingle and part with ease and elegance. It is a timeless work of joy and friendship that has lasted the test of time.
