Carlos Miranda (1945-2016). Spanish composer, conductor and musician
Carlos Miranda was a Spanish composer, pianist and conductor who wrote extensively for dance. Born in Chile, he studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Chile, and then at the Royal College of Music in London in 1971. He joined Ballet Rambert in 1974 as company pianist and assistant music director, collaborating on many works with the company. Miranda wrote the music for The Parades Gone By (1975) with choreographer Lindsay Kemp, before creating Cruel Garden in 1977. The work was so successful it was recorded by BBC Television, which led to Miranda receiving the Prix Italia in 1982. He collaborated with Kemp and the Lindsay Kemp Company on a number of dance works, including The Big Parade. Carlos Miranda continued to compose for theatre and film, as well as commissions for BBC Radio 3 and the City of London Festival. He conducted the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. Carlos Miranda died in 2016.
