1977 – Premiere of Christopher Bruce’s Cruel Garden by Ballet Rambert

Down Arrow

Christopher Bruce’s Cruel Garden is a powerful work in two acts; a surreal fantasy based on the life of the Spanish poet Gabriel García Lorca, who was murdered by General Franco’s Nationalist Militia during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Choreographed by Christopher Bruce for Ballet Rambert at London’s Roundhouse, the production was directed by Lindsay Kemp and starred Bruce himself in the roe of Lorca. The music for Cruel Garden was by Carlos Miranda, with sets by Ralph Koltai and costumes by Kemp. Other cast members included John Tsakiris, Michael Ho and John Chesworth.
