Alexander Whitley (1980–). British dancer and choreographer

Born in 1980, Alexander Whitley trained at The Royal Ballet School and started his performing career with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Leaving the classical landscape, Whitley moved on to dance with contemporary companies Rambert Dance Company, Michael Clark Company, Random Dance and Sydney Dance Company.

During his performing career, Whitley began to choreograph, winning nominations for awards including the 2012 Arts Foundation fellowship and the 2015 Critics’ Circle Awards. Whitley established his own company, Alexander Whitley Dance Company in 2014, aiming to create works that placed an exploration of the creative possibilities of digital platforms at their centre. Whitley’s dances have a reputation for the interdisciplinary approach he maintains, working with some of the contemporary world’s most exciting filmmakers, designers, artists and composers. Whitley is a New Wave Associate artist at Sadler’s Wells, an associate of Rambert and a former choreographic associate of The Royal Ballet. Alexander Whitley has made works for The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, BalletBoyz and Candoco Dance Company.
