1990 – Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet renamed Birmingham Royal Ballet

Down Arrow

In 1987, Birmingham City Council and the Birmingham Hippodrome invited Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet to become a resident company, meaning Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet would relocate its base to Birmingham. The move was completed in 1990 and the company changed its name to Birmingham Royal Ballet. The move reflected Peter Wright’s increasingly independent vision for the company over its long connection with The Royal Ballet. In 1990, Wright created a successful production of The Nutcracker as a gift for the city.
