1974 – Premiere of Robert North’s Troy Game by London Contemporary Dance Theatre

Down Arrow

An all-male work choreographed in 1974 by Robert North for London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Troy Game playfully ridicules muscle-bound machismo whilst also offering its cast plenty of bravura dances that draw upon Brazilian capoeira and shadow boxing. With Brazilian-flavoured music by Bob Downes, and costumes by Peter Farmer that are little more than tiny briefs, the success of Troy Game had as much to do with the sex appeal and charisma of the men of London Contemporary Dance Contemporary Dance Theatre as it did North’s enjoyable choreography. Troy Game has since been performed by many companies around the world, most notably by Dance Theatre of Harlem.
