1951 – Ballet Workshop established

Down Arrow

Marie Rambert’s daughter, Angela, established Ballet Workshop, along with her husband, David Ellis in 1951. The aim of Ballet Workshop was to give space and time for new and experimental works to be created and performed at the Mercury Theatre. The venture was testament to the pioneering spirit of Rambert and her company. Ballet Workshop ended in 1955. In 1951, Ballet Workshop presented Midsummer Watch, the first piece of choreography by the upcoming Peter Darrell, then a dancer with Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet. The designs were by his colleague Kenneth MacMillan, working under the pseudonym Kenneth Aadams.
