1941 – Jay Pomeroy Ballet founded

We associate the Jay Pomeroy Ballet with four companies that existed in different permutations between 1941 and 1945. The original Pomeroy ballet was established in September 1941 as part of theatre impresario Jay Pomeroy’s musical extravaganza at the Savoy Theatre. Pomeroy took over the Cambridge Theatre in 1942, presenting his New Russian Opera and Ballet with dancers from the previous iterations of his group. It was here Pauline Grant became connected to the Pomeroy Ballet, taking dancers from this company when Pomeroy’s venture closed at the Cambridge Theatre in 1942. Pomeroys’ presentation of British ballet at the Cambridge ceased in 1945, where he instead concentrated on opera.
