Paula Hinton (1924-96). British dancer
Paula Hinton was born in Ilford in 1924, but was brought up in Liverpool, where she studied under Hilda Delamere Wright. In 1944, recommended by Andrée Howard, Hinton joined Ballet Rambert. With further teaching from Stanislas Idzikowski and Audrey de Vos, she graduated to major roles, particularly for Walter Gore, whom she married in 1950 and who created 20 roles on her.
In the 1950s Hinton worked in Europe, notably at the Frankfurt Opera from 1956 to 1958. In 1961 she was the ballerina for London Ballet and, from 1965 until 1969 for the Gulbenkian Ballet in Lisbon. During 1971 and 1972 she appeared as a guest artist with Northern Dance Theatre. On Gore’s death in 1979, Hinton worked at reviving some of his ballets. Hinton died in Birkenhead in 1996.
