Morton Subotnick (1933-). American composer
Morton Subotnick is an American electronic composer who has pioneered the use of computers and multimedia in music. He studied at the University of Denver and went on to found the San Francisco Tape Music Centre, obtaining a Rockefeller Grant. He worked with electronic instrument designer Don Bucharest in constructing an Electronic Music Box that had sequencing abilities that Subotnick utilised in his compositions. In 1968, Ballet Rambert and choreographer Glen Tetley utilised Subotnick’s music Silver Apples of the Moon in the creation of Embrace Tiger and Return to Mountain. The work, based on the Chinese art of T’ai Chi, has also been performed by Nederlands Dans Theater, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Feld Ballet.
