Matz Skoog (1957-    ), Dancer and Director

Matz Skoog was born in Stockholm, where his training in dance began at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. He also trained in the former Soviet Union. On graduating from the Royal Swedish Ballet School, he became a member of the Royal Swedish Ballet. In 1979, Skoog left Sweden to join English National Ballet, where he progressed from corps de ballet to soloist to principal dancer. He also danced with the Netherlands Dance Theatre and the Rambert Dance Company.

From 1996 until 2001, he was artistic director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, a position he occupied for 5 years, up to 2001. From 2001 to 2005, he was artistic director of English National Ballet.

From 2006 onwards, Matz Skoog has pursued a career in coaching, teaching and providing artistic advice. In these capacities he has worked with many national dance companies and schools in Sweden, Finland, Holland, Belgium, China, Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the UK, where he has worked with the Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Wayne McGregor Random Dance. In 2017 and 2022 he was a final judge for the BBC Young Dancer award.  He currently runs his own Matz Skoog Coaching as a personal development coach.
