Marian St. Claire (1946–). British ballerina and teacher

Marian St. Claire was born in Hull, Yorkshire, and was trained locally before entering the Ballet Rambert School. St. Claire joined Ballet Rambert in 1966, but left to join the Cape Town Ballet in 1967 when Rambert began to perform only modern works. She returned to Britain in 1969 to join Western Theatre Ballet, which later that year moved to Scotland to become Scottish Theatre Ballet. She danced many leading roles with the company, and also with New London Ballet, London Festival Ballet and Northern Ballet Theatre, among others. In 1979 she became instrumental in the founding of London City Ballet, dancing all the major roles and working as assistant artistic director. Alongside Harold King.

St. Claire travelled extensively during her career, and performed as a guest artist in Canada, Japan, Sweden, Germany and Zimbabwe and in international festivals in Chicago, Poland, Cuba, Spain and Romania. She also toured with Margot Fonteyn and made guest appearances in Wayne Sleep’s Hot Shoe Show, Sleep With Friends, Bits and Pieces and Wayne’s World of Dance. Marian St Claire retired from the stage in 1996 and has since worked as a teacher and consultant. Together with her husband, Michael Beare, she taught at the Liverpool Theatre School.
