John Macfarlane (1948–). British artist and theatre designer

John Macfarlane studied at Glasgow School of Art and combines a career as a painter and theatre designer. For dance, he has worked in Europe and North America with contemporary choreographers such as Jirí Kylián and Glen Tetley. His first designs for The Royal Ballet were for Peter Wright’s production of Giselle, followed by Tetley’s La Ronde, and Liam Scarlett’s Asphodel Meadows, Sweet Violets, The Age of Anxiety and Frankenstein, as well as Scarlett’s staging of Swan Lake. Macfarlane worked again with Wright on Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker. For Birmingham Royal Ballet he also designed the sets and costumes for David Bintley’s Cinderella and Michael Corder’s Le Baiser de la fée.
