Ivan Nagy (1943–2014). Hungarian dancer and director

Ivan Nagy was born in Hungary in 1943 and trained in dance with his mother before performing with the Hungarian State Opera Ballet. He won the silver medal at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1965 and subsequently joined the National Ballet of Washington, where he remained for three years. After a short stay with New York City Ballet, Nagy moved to American Ballet Theatre (ABT) where he was as a principal dancer for the following ten years. Noted for his style and elegance, he enjoyed famous partnerships with the great ABT ballerinas of the day. After he left the company, he held various posts as artistic director for the next two decades, in both North and South America, as well as in Britain with English National Ballet from 1990 to 1993. He died in Hungary in 2014 whilst acting as artistic adviser to the Hungarian State Ballet.

After Peter Schaufuss stepped down as artistic director of English National Ballet, Ivan Nagy was appointed his successor.
