Irene Sharaff (1910–1993). American costume designer

Irene Sharaff studied at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts, the Art Students League of New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Working first in illustration, Sharaff then designed costumes extensively for stage and film, often for leading Hollywood actors, and won Academy Awards for her involvement on West Side Story, Cleopatra, The King and I, and An American in Paris. She worked with choreographer Jerome Robbins on the costumes for his ballets Afternoon of a Faun, The Concert, Facsimile, Fanfare, Interplay and West Side Story Suite. Additionally, Sharaff designed costumes for George Balanchine’s Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, as well as ballets by Alicia Alonso, Agnes de Mille and John Taras. Irene Sharaff died in 1993.
