Ian Spink (1947- 2023). Australian dancer, choreographer and director

Ian Spink was born in Melbourne in 1947. He trained at the Australian School of Ballet, and from 1968 until 1977 danced and choreographed for several companies in Australia. In 1974 he worked with the Merce Cunningham Company on the company’s Australian tour.

In 1977 Spink moved permanently to Britain, initially to London. In 1982 he co-founded Second Stride, along with Siobhan Davies and Richard Alston, and in 1990 directed Judith Weir’s opera The Vanishing Bridegroom for Scottish Opera, and also for television. He also worked at the Edinburgh International Festival. From 2005 until 2010, Spink was director of Citymoves Dance Agency in Aberdeen. Subsequently he has worked for The Work Room, a base for choreography in Glasgow, and has directed and performed with Airfield, a modern performance company. Ian Spink died in 2023.
