Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960). Swedish composer, conductor and musician
Hugo Alfvén was a Swedish composer, conductor and violinist who worked with the Royal Opera House in Stockholm. A contemporary of Wilhelm Stenhammar, Alfvén’s compositions were in a late Romantic style and were widely popular. His work was often inspired by his homeland; he wrote three Swedish Rhapsodies, along with five symphonies and a ballet, Bergakungen (The Mountain King), composed between 1916 and 1923. The ballet was first performed by the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm, with choreography by Jean Börlin. A later ballet, The Prodigal Son, was completed in 1957 with choreography by Ivo Cramér.
