Hugh Stevenson (1910-1956). British stage designer

Theatre designer Hugh Stevenson worked on a number of significant productions in Ballet Rambert’s repertoire from the early 1930s until the 1950s. These included Antony Tudor’s Gala Performance, Jardin aux Lilas (Lilac Garden), The Planets and Soirée Musicale; Andrée Howard’s The Fugitive and The Glass Slipper; Elsa Brunelleschi’s Flamenco; and a full-length staging of Giselle in 1946. In addition, Stevenson designed the sets and costumes for the Vic-Wells Ballet’s first full-length production of Swan Lake in 1934, as well as Ninette de Valois’ The Gods Go A-Begging in 1936 and Promenade in 1943. Later, Furse designed Howard’s Mardi Gras for Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet in 1946, and for Festival Ballet another Giselle in 1950, along with David Lichine’s Impressions in 1951. Stevenson died in 1956.
