Elizabeth Schooling (1915-1998). Dancer, teacher and choreographer

Elizabeth Schooling was born in London in 1915 and studied with Marie Rambert. Her early career commenced with performances with both the Ballet Club and the Camargo Society, but from 1930 onwards, Schooling danced mainly with Ballet Rambert, both in London and on tour, at home and abroad, including Australia. Her career spanned more than 20 years, during which time she danced, and also created roles in a vast repertoire of works, and became a ballerina of note. After her retirement from the stage she became a teacher and choreographer. In keeping with her Rambert links, Schooling often created ballets for Rambert’s school, and also created a work for The Royal Ballet School in 1970. Schooling was married to the dancer and choreographer Frank Staff, and she died in 1998 at the age of 83.
