Edward Elgar (1857-1934). British composer
Edward Elgar was a British composer who wrote music in the late-Romantic idiom; he is thought to be responsible for a resurgence in popularity for British classical music. Largely self-taught as a composer, Elgar’s works, including Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, the Cello Concerto and the Violin Sonata are all categorised as masterworks of their genre, his bold harmonic choices and wonderful musical colours marking him as one of the most significant composers of his time. Frederick Ashton was greatly inspired by Enigma Variations and created a ballet to that music for The Royal Ballet in 1968.
