Édouard Lalo (1823-1892). French composer and musician
Édouard Lalo was a French composer and violinist who studied at the Paris Conservatoire. Due to public distaste of his more progressive and Wagnerian compositions, Lalo largely devoted his career to chamber music and music for solo instrument and piano. However, late in his career he was commissioned by the Paris Opéra to create a ballet score – Namouna, with choreography by Lucien Petipa. Music from Namouna was later used by Serge Lifar for his ballet Suite en blanc (later titled Noir et blanc), first performed by the Paris Opéra Ballet in 1943. London Festival Ballet added the ballet to its repertoire in 1966, sometimes performing the work under its original title.
