Carl Davis (1936-2023). British composer, conductor and musician
Carl Davis was an American born British conductor and composer writing for film, television and ballet. He wrote music for over 100 television programmes – most famously for BBC Television’s Pride and Prejudice. He studied at Bard College in New York, gaining experience conducting for New York City Opera. In 1960, he moved to London and began writing scores for the BBC, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. He wrote ballet scores for many companies including London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre (including A Simple Man) and Birmingham Royal Ballet. His legacy in ballet sits alongside his work in reinventing the silent movie through composing new accompanying music, Abel Gance’s Napoleon in particular, as well as his many orchestral and choral works.
