André Levasseur (1927–2006). French couturier and theatre designer

André Levasseur studied at the École de la Haute Couture Parisienne and worked for Christian Dior. Levasseur designed many plays, including productions for the Comédie Française and the National Theatre, and costumes for major galas at Monte Carlo from 1954 until 1994, including the Fanfare pour le prince that celebrated the wedding of Prince Rainier of Monaco to Grace Kelly. Levasseur was known for the couture-like construction of his ballet costumes, working with Frederick Ashton on Birthday Offering, La Péri, La Valse and Raymonda pas de deux, as well as George Balanchine’s Night Shadow, Theme and Variations and Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, and John Taras’ Piège de lumière.
