Australian-born Lloyd Newson studied psychology and social work at Melbourne University before an interest in dance prompted his move to study at London Contemporary Dance School. Newson launched Extemporary Dance Theatre in 1985, working on a commission from Dance Umbrella. In 1986, he established DV8 Physical Theatre where he produced work that reflects his interest in social, psychological and political issues, all executed with a unique voice within the British dance landscape. 2012’s Can We Talk About This won a prestigious Helpmann Award. Other important works by DV8 include Dead Dreams of Monochrome Men and Strange Fish. The company closed in 2022 when Newson announced his retirement.
