1967 – London School of Contemporary Dance founded

Down Arrow

After seeing Martha Graham’s company perform in Britain in 1954, philanthropist Robin Howard set out to develop and sustain contemporary dance in Britain. He established the Contemporary Dance Trust in 1966, and persuaded Robert Cohan, a leading dancer with the Graham company, to head up a school that opened in Berners Place, London, with the aim to teach Graham technique. Richard Alston, Robert North and Siobhan Davies were all members of London School of Contemporary Dance’s first cohort. It later became the London Contemporary Dance School.
