London-based London City Ballet was established in 1978 by South African-born dancer Harold King, giving lunchtime performances with an initial collection of only eight dancers. During the 1980s the company’s ranks swelled to over 40, with an array of starry guest performers. Diana, Princess of Wales became patron in 1983. Following a change of name to City Ballet of London, the company closed in 1996 after financial difficulties. The repertory included a notable production of Cinderella by Matthew Hart. In 2023, Christopher Marney announced the relaunch of London City Ballet in 2024, including a season at Sadler’s Wells.
